YouTube has announced that it will suspend all channels that post “false videos claiming widespread allegations of election fraud,” rather than just giving them a warning, as was its previous policy.
In a statement Thursday (Jan. 7), the company said, “Due to the disturbing events that occurred yesterday, and given that the election results have now been certified, as of today, any channel that posts new videos with false claims that violate our policy will now be suspended,” CNBC reported. “
YouTube’s regular policy allows for one warning to be issued to a channel after it has posted false content. Channels that are called out will be temporarily suspended from posting videos or going live for a week. If they receive the same callout three times within 90 days, YouTube will permanently ban their channels and videos.
YouTube said it has removed thousands of videos in the past month that spread “misinformation” claiming widespread election fraud changed the outcome of the 2020 election, including “several” videos posted by President Trump on his channel.
YouTube removed a video posted by President Trump on Wednesday (Jan. 6) that it said made “false claims” about the outcome of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. A spokeswoman for YouTube did not respond to a request for comment.
YouTube’s competitors have gone further in the fight against Trump. Facebook (Facebook) announced Thursday that it will take the unprecedented step of banning Trump from posting at least until presidential inauguration day, if not longer. Twitter also blocked several of Trump’s tweets, saying they contained “false statements,” and banned him from making new posts for 12 hours until he deleted them.
