Hong Kong police arrested 53 pan-democrats today on charges of subversion of state power and violating the National Security Law of Hong Kong. The last Governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten, condemned the arrests in a statement and called on the European Union to cancel the EU-China investment agreement with China.
Chris Patten, the last governor of Hong Kong, condemned the arrest of the pan-democrats by the Hong Kong police and called for the cancellation of the EU-China investment agreement, AFP reported today. In a statement, Patten said: “The Chinese Communist Party is taking advantage of political issues and epidemics that are distracting everyone around the world to further clamp down on Hong Kong. It is clear that supporting democracy will now be seen as illegal.
Patten’s statement added: “Free democracies around the world must continue to speak out against this brutal destruction of free societies and the genocide in the Xinjiang region.
AFP said the British government has yet to comment on the Hong Kong police’s mass arrests.
Late last month, EU leaders and Chinese Communist Party President Xi Jinping reached an investment agreement “in principle”. Patten said the agreement “insults human rights and shows an illusion of the credibility of the Chinese Communist Party. He added that “it is of course unthinkable that the European Parliament would support this pathetic draft agreement that the European Commission intends to sign with Beijing.
According to AFP, Patten also believes that the agreement is a “serious strategic mistake” because US President-elect Joe Biden will take the White House this month and will cooperate with other democracies in the future to fight the bullying practices of the Chinese Communist Party.
