Taiwan’s military: a total of aircraft around Taiwan to strengthen the United States justified arms sales to Taiwan

Frequent Chinese Communist Party military flights around Taiwan in 2020

The National Defense Security Research Institute, a think tank of Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, recently published the “2020 Chinese Communist Party Annual Report,” pointing out that the frequency of Chinese military aircraft circling Taiwan in 2020 reinforces the legitimacy of U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

The report points out that the harassment of Taiwan’s air defense identification zone by Chinese military aircraft in 2020 is the longest Chinese intimidation of Taiwan since the 1996 Taiwan Strait crisis, with the number of days reaching 91, of which the harassment of the southwest corner is the largest.

The report points out that the reason for the frequent access of Chinese military aircraft to the southwest corner is that the median line in the Taiwan Strait does not extend to the southwest corner of Taiwan’s air defense identification zone, which is used by the Chinese Communist Party to test Taiwan’s reaction and exert pressure; at the same time, it is also intended to exert stealth pressure on the defense of the Dongsha Islands and to strengthen its control over the nearby airspace against the activities of the U.S. military in this area.

The report argues that these intimidations by the CCP have caused a review and extensive mobilization of Taiwan’s defense in the system. At the same time, the justification for U.S. arms sales of offensive weapons to Taiwan has been further reinforced by the high density of Communist military intimidation.
